Water
pollution is becoming a problem on the global scale. By transitioning to
renewable energy, we can greatly reduce pollution. Creating electricity burns
fossil fuels which emit air pollution and waste that can contaminate rivers and
lakes. We can avoid that by investing in infinite, clean energy resources such
as solar, hydro, and wind.
For
the upcoming Super Bowl game, Green Mountain Energy Company will be providing
15,000 megawatt hours to “Lucas Oil Stadium, site of Super Bowl XLVI, the
Indiana Convention Center, site of the NFL Experience Football Theme Park, and
all four of the major NFL hotels including the NFL Headquarters, the Super Bowl
Media Center, and the AFC and NFC team hotels” (INDIANAPOLIS (Press Release)).
The energy is being supplied by the company’s wind farms located in North
Dakota. This will prevent 14,000 tons of greenhouse gases that are associated
with the Super Bowl over the course of the month getting ready and dismounting
everything. Carbon offsets will are also going to be provided to cover the
emissions created by the air travel that the teams are being transported in.
The
NFL Environmental Program seems to be really on top of things this year,
because I have never about them before reading this article. Maybe they have
and it is just not well known; I can thank Google Alerts for this bit of very
interesting information that I probably would have never known otherwise.
